Assistant Estimator

Description
  • Participate as needed in every level of the estimating process including: reviewing of contract document issues and requirements, attending pre-bid meetings and traveling to job locations to confirm project site conditions. Meet bid deadlines and customer presentation requirements. Ensure thorough and accurate take-off.
  • Professionally and adequately estimate the cost for and pacing of the personnel, equipment, materials and trade partners associated with each project.
  • Prepares thorough, accurate and timely estimates for both public and private sector structure projects, including the preparation of bid documents and development of clear written proposals and correspondence.
  • Identify labor, material, and time requirements by studying proposals, blueprints, specifications and related documents. Identify risk issues and determine their magnitude in the bid process.
  • Prepare scope and bid package breakdowns for trade partner and vendor quotes. Solicit subcontractor and/or supplier information pricing.
  • Prepare trade partner bid analysis for scope, cost and price and prepare trade partner agreements.
  • Maintain files as back-up for estimate figures. Review and incorporate historical data from past projects, trade partners, productivity analysis reports, etc. into unit and man hour figures as appropriate.
  • Track and review unsuccessful bids for learning opportunities.
  • Process contracts and bond requests.
  • Develop proficiency in the use of Company/project estimating systems and processes and recognize estimating processes/project actions that may impact the project costs. Analyze alternate means and methods to determine the economic choice.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.
  • Actively engage in industry-emerging technologies and/or construction techniques to help expand the capacities of the company’s market share and profitability.
  • Review and update the estimating software master database for future and ongoing bids. Monitor material and labor costs associated with ongoing projects for updating master database in estimating software.
  • Follow awarded contracts as assigned; may include estimating/pricing extra work items, change orders, credits, procuring material, etc.
Requirements

Education:

  • High School Diploma. A University or trade school degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management is preferred.

Experience:

  • Experience in relevant experience in construction estimating and contract administration supported by formal training, Min. 5 years experience.

Knowledge, Skills:

  • Knowledge of Agtek Earthwork 4D or similar takeoff software
  • Knowledge of B2W (Bid to Win) and/or HCSS construction management software.
  • Advanced level Excel skills.
  • Ability to read/interpret detailed prints and specifications for conceptual, lump sum or unit pricing and to negotiate pricing as directed.
  • Working understanding of profit and loss terminology such as cost, margin and fee is a must.
  • Underground utility and site work construction estimating experience including earthwork, grading, underground utilities, concrete and paving is mandatory.
  • Knowledge and understanding of union agreements and prevailing wage issues.
  • Must Demonstrate decision making skills.
  • Ability to work quickly and effectively in a fast paced, high energy environment to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and completely.
  • Accuracy at all times a must.
  • Design-build project experience a plus.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, capable of working as a member of a team, and operating independently.
