Director of Adult Choirs Position Description
Work with the Worship Arts Coordinator in the coordination, planning and implementation of adult choral music. Direct the adult Chancel Choir and Chamber Choir (Schola Cantorum) to provide excellent music bringing depth of meaning and vitality to the worship services. Encourage and cultivate the spiritual growth of singers and musicians. As “Adult Choral Director,” have a pastoral relationship with all those involved in adult music ministry.
Ministry Responsibilities:
Select music for choirs and other groups/individuals providing music during services
Select music that provides for spiritual and musical development
Discern other duties in conjunction with the Worship Arts Coordinator
Coordinate with other choir directors, organist and Worship Arts Coordinator
Recruiting and supervision of Choral Scholars
Lead rehearsals and direct the Chancel Choir and Chamber Choir (Schola Cantorum)
Provide all music titles and information for the Sunday bulletin
Provide a comprehensive schedule for choir members.
Work Schedule:
Estimated 15 hours per week, salaried position
Two weekly Adult Choir rehearsals-Chancel Choir on Wednesday from 7:30pm-9pm, Schola Cantorum –Day and time to be determined
Schedule music for services during summer months.
Special services during Advent and Christmas and other worship experiences,
Rehearsal and service preparation time.
Time to research appropriate music.
Time for pastoral care, choir promotion and relationship building
Direct the Chancel Choir at Sunday services September to May
Lead congregational singing and coordinate soloists and ensembles on Sundays June - August
Direct Schola Cantorum on Sunday services from September to May and special services or concerts to be determined.
Education and Training:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in vocal music and/or sacred music.
Preferred: Master’s degree in vocal music and/or sacred music
Required: Past successful experience in church music
Preferred: 2-4 years experience in church music
Continuing education (workshops, reading sessions, etc.)
Active member of professional organizations (ACDA, NafMe, AGO, etc.)
Qualifications and Skills:
General
Strong faith and spiritual foundation
Able to champion the church’s purpose, vision, mission and journey
Strong organizational, planning and communication skills
Excellence in the art of choral music and conducting
Understanding of the relationship between theology and music in worship
Knowledge and understanding of the liturgical seasons
Adult Choral Director
Knowledge of quality, appropriate literature for each choral ensemble’s enrichment and growth
Experience with orchestral and choral orchestral masterworks; ability to direct instrumental ensembles
Capable of modeling appropriate vocal pedagogy
Passion and vision for a sacred music ministry that contributes to worship vitality
Ability to organize, motivate, lead and train people to use their musical gifts for worship
Appreciation for a wide range of choral music for worship
Salary and Benefits:
Salary commensurate with education and experience
