Description
Are you a seasoned and certified Building Commissioner ready to make a transformative
impact in one of Massachusetts’ most dynamic and innovative cities? The City of Somerville
is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Inspectional Services to lead a
multidisciplinary team dedicated to public safety, code compliance, and quality of life in one
of Massachusetts’ most exciting urban centers. This is a unique leadership opportunity to
manage complex operations across building, zoning, public health, plumbing/gas, electrical,
and weights and measures — and to play a pivotal role in shaping Somerville’s built
environment.
Reporting directly to the Mayor, the Director will oversee all inspectional services
operations, manage departmental budgets, guide policy development, and engage with
residents, developers, businesses, and elected officials to ensure compliance and advance
Somerville’s strategic development goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a multidisciplinary department for inspectional services including Building, Health,
and Weights & Measures divisions. - Oversee enforcement of all laws, codes, and regulations related to building construction,
zoning, and public health. - Administer and manage the department’s budget and operational planning.
Serve as a key advisor to the Mayor on inspectional services and public safety matters.
Coordinate with other department leadership to proactively address problem properties.
Represent the City before elected bodies, regulatory agencies, developers, and the
public. - Oversee the use of CitizenServe, the City’s licensing and permitting software, and
streamline processes for efficiency.
Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, public administration, or a related field.
- 10+ years of relevant municipal or code enforcement experience, including significant
supervisory responsibility. - Construction Supervisor’s License required.
- Certified Building Official.
- Strong knowledge of building codes, zoning, public health, and related regulations.
- Proven ability to lead teams, manage budgets, analyze complex issues, and communicate
effectively with diverse stakeholders.
