OverviewGolf, Club and Hospitality Industry Friends: Golf Business Advisors is assisting the Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market, Virginia in their search for a new General Manager.
Shenvalee Golf Resort was founded in 1927 and features 27 holes of championship golf, 44 guest rooms and a popular Miller's Grille with great casual food--and all with beautiful mountain views. They host a combination of member play, golf packages and daily fee golfers and are known for their Shenandoah Valley hospitality. Outlined below is an overview of the Shenvalee Golf Resort and the General Manager position. Although previous General Manager resort experience is preferred, they may also consider candidates who have been in Assistant Manager positions at other resorts or clubs. They may also consider PGA Golf Professionals who are interested in expanding their career experience.

Shenvalee Golf Resort Overview
The Shenvalee Golf Resort is located in New Market, Virginia and opened in 1927 with the opening shot hit by Bobby Jones. Over those 99 years of operation, they have hosted thousands of golf package guests from many northern and north central states (and Canada) plus daily fee golfers from throughout the Shenandoah Valley, northern Virginia and West Virginia. In addition, they have an active golf membership of local golfers, plus a very successful Miller's Grille for both resort guests and local dining patrons. The facility is located within a mile of interstate I-81 and between Harrisonburg and Winchester and between the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountain ranges, thus offering spectacular mountain views.
Shenvalee Golf Resort is owned by approximately 140 unique shareholders who together own over 2,000 shares of stock under the name of Shenvalee Lodge, Incorporated. Shenvalee Lodge Incorporated is governed by By Laws and an 11-member Board of Directors are elected each year to oversee and direct the company. The Shenvalee Golf Resort has a history of total revenues of approximately $4 million per year and has been profitable for their shareholders for many years.
General Manager Position Overview
SUMMARY : The General Manager is responsible for all of the aspects of the Shenvalee Golf Resort's day to day operations. Directs and coordinates all activities, facilities and programs of Shenvalee Golf Resort including a 27-hole golf course, 44 room motel, Fairway House, food & beverage operation and building and grounds to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations in order to maximize member and guest satisfaction and profits by performing the following duties personally or through the management team and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following although other duties may be assigned. Key aspects include excellent communication skills with staff and members and guests.
The General Manager coordinates activities of all Resort departments and works closely with management team including golf course, golf operations, golf instruction, merchandise sales, motel operations, food & beverage operations, building & grounds, sales and marketing, finance & planning, and human resources in order to affect outstanding service and operational efficiencies. Confers with sales and marketing, and administrative personnel to review activity, operating, and sales reports to determine changes in programs or operations required to continue to grow top line revenue. Directs and coordinates promotion of memberships, local golf, golf packages or services performed to develop new markets, increase share of market, and obtain competitive position in industry. Compiles all long-range plans, annual department budgets, and capital spending plans and gains Board approval of each annually. Monitors approved budgets throughout the year to ensure that all departments are managed efficiently. Reviews and takes action on customer comment cards and surveys to offer continuous improvements. Manages all accounting, inventories, banking, audit procedures, cash flow, and establishes controls to safeguard funds and assets. works with the Finance Manager and outside accounting and auditors to close the books monthly and to produce the Resort annual report. There is a long-range strategic plan that includes many capital projects and the General Manager will be overseeing the plan and all capital projects.
Reports to the President of the Board of Directors and performs any and all duties assigned by the President. Directs preparation of directives to departments outlining policies, program, or operations change to be implemented. Promotes organization in industry, golf, motel and food & beverage associations and attends such meetings and/or shows when called upon. Assigns duties and examines work of management team for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures. Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency of staff harmony among workers and resolves grievances with employees and guests when necessary. Scrutinizes all incoming invoices, approves for payment, and signs all accounts payable and payroll checks. Chairs weekly meetings with management team and addresses and resolves errors and complaints..
Other duties and responsibilities performed by management team but reviewed by the General Manager include the following: Examines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow. Reviews all bookings of special functions such as weddings, receptions, reunions, tournaments, etc. Reviews all supply, equipment and other expense purchases for all departments. Reviews or assists with all advertising with newspapers, television, radio, social & digital media and magazines done by management team staff. Approves vacation, sick and FMLA leave of all management team. Reviews vacation, sick and FMLA leave approved by management team. Performs or assists management team in performing duties.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Holds and maintains CMAA and/or PGA membership in good standing in an active classification. Must be creative, self-starter and capable of working independently. Available to work a flexible work week to include some evenings and weekends. Ability to write clear, concise reports, memoranda and letters. Must have excellent oral communication skills and be able to make presentations to formal and informal groups. Must be accessible to the public and capable of developing and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of community groups, business owners, package group leaders and members of the Shenvalee Golf Resort.
Bachelor's Degree preferred with at least 5-7 years of experience in Hospitality Management preferred. Prior experience or combination of education in Business with a concentration in Business, Sport and Recreation Management, Hospitality Management, Communications, or related fields. Also preferred, experience in traditional and digital, social & mobile marketing, public relations, and event management. Computer experience with Microsoft Office products.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Occasional exertion of force of approximately 20 lbs. but not to exceed 50 lbs. Work requires speaking, hearing, sitting, and using hands to finger, handle or feel. Position requires walking, standing and other repetitive motions.
Additional Information
The Shenvalee Golf Resort is seeking a General Manager with excellent hospitality and/or club experience to lead the Shenvalee Golf Resort's team of excellent management and staff members for the continued success of Shenvalee. The position reports to the President of the Board of Directors, is a year round position and manages a staff of approximately 80 employees in season. The salary and benefits for the General Manager position will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experience.
