Role Description – Middle School Teacher / ALE / ESD-ESY / HiCap Coordinator
Reports to: Superintendent/Principal
Work Year: 180 days
Compensation: Salary Range $55,294 to $103,056, Pay will be based on placement on the
salary schedule included in the Certificated Contract. Benefits include: Medical, Dental and
Retirement
Primary Purpose:
Lead the Garfield School District’s Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) program, coordinate
Extended School Year (ESY) services through the ESD, oversee Highly Capable (HiCap)
identification and services, and provide direct middle school instruction with an emphasis on
individualized, flexible learning pathways. The coordinator ensures program compliance, high-
quality learning experiences, and effective communication with families, staff, and
administrators.
Alternative Learning Experience (ALE) (approximately 40% of the position)
Serve as ALE Administrator of Record and ensure full compliance with WAC
requirements.
Maintain audit-ready documentation and conduct regular file reviews.
Support staff and families with student learning plans and provide ALE training.
Complete OSPI reporting and respond to monitoring requests.
ESD/ESY Coordination (approximately 25% of the position)
Oversee after-school academic, enrichment, and intervention programs.
Recruit and supervise program staff; manage schedules, communication, and safety
procedures.
Monitor program effectiveness and oversee related budgets or grants.
Highly Capable (HiCap) Program (approximately 10% of the position)
Coordinate screening, referrals, testing, and family communication.
Lead the HiCap selection committee and document decisions per WAC 392-170.
Support implementation of district HiCap service models and staff training.
Maintain required documentation and OSPI reporting.
Middle School Instruction (approximately 25% of the position)
Teach core middle school subjects with differentiated, student-centered instruction.
Support academic growth through targeted interventions. Collaborate with general and special education staff to align services.
Ensure equitable access for all learners, including students with unique needs.
General Responsibilities
Maintain accurate records and communicate regularly with staff and families.
Support budgets, grants, and program improvement efforts.
Participate in required professional development and present updates to
administration or the School Board when needed.
Requirements
Required Qualifications
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate.
Knowledge of ALE requirements (WAC 392-121-182) and HiCap rules (WAC 392-
170).
Strong organizational, communication, and record-keeping skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with staff and families.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in ALE, after-school coordination, or HiCap programs.
Training in gifted education or advanced learner strategies.
Experience supervising staff or managing programs.
Valid Washington Principal endorsement or currently enrolled in a program
Working Conditions
School and office environments.
Regular after-school hours; occasional evening or family events.
Performance Metrics
ALE student engagement, retention, and WSLP completion.
Demonstrated student academic growth.
Compliance and timely reporting for ALE, ESY, and HiCap programs.
Effective communication and family satisfaction.
High-quality instruction and support for diverse learning pathways.
Workload / Hours
1.0 FTE, including flexible/remote ALE contact hours and coordination time for HiCap and ES
