Position Summary
This position’s duties are associated with assisting the Parks and Recreation Manager with the Township’s recreation programs, events, and use of recreation facilities. This position is directly supervised by the Recreation Manager.
Essential Duties
Assists the Recreation Manager with planning, coordinating, and implementing recreation programs, nature/environmental initiatives, and community special events for all age groups.
Recommends strategies to enhance participation and evaluates program needs, trends, and outcomes.
Collects, organizes, and analyzes participation data and facility use to support program development and improvement.
Attends all special events in their entirety, supporting staff and completing tasks to ensure a successful outcome.
Provides occasional guidance for part-time recreation staff.
Monitors recreation facilities to ensure they are clean, safe, and in good condition; communicates maintenance needs to appropriate staff.
Oversees inventory and storage of program equipment and supplies.
Conducts outreach to community groups, partners, and stakeholders to promote programs and partnership opportunities.
Maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, contractors, volunteers, and the public.
Assists with preparing program information, marketing materials, and public communications, including newsletters, press releases, website updates, and social media content.
Researches program ideas, fees, equipment, and materials to support service development.
Supports adherence to department policies, procedures, and operational standards for recreation programs and facilities.
Participates in internal committee work, assists with agendas and meeting documentation, and helps cultivate sponsors and partners.
Assists with regular inspections of programs and facilities to ensure quality, efficiency, and compliance.
Maintains the annual master program calendar, including permits, partnerships, and service agreements.
Assists with volunteer outreach, coordination, and recognition as time permits.
Follows all safety, security, and risk-management policies and immediately reports concerns to the Parks and Recreation Director.
Participates in all required annual safety training.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications
High school diploma; degree with core course work in Parks and Recreation or related field strongly preferred.
Minimum one year experience, either individually or combined, developing parks and recreation programs, working with public, working with websites and/or social media promotion and account maintenance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must be organized and detail oriented in all components of the job.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Good public relations skills.
Demonstrated computer and technology skills utilizing various software applications including social media, marketing platforms, creative design tools, and platforms related to recreation, facility management and program registration.
Experience generating and implementing ideas in parks and recreation programs such as fitness/healthy lifestyles, leisure, nature/outdoor programs, and sports programs.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Willingness and ability to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
Special Requirements, Licenses, and Certifications:
Valid Michigan driver’s license with good driving record; subject to background checks.
First Aid and CPR certification, or willing to obtain within 6 months.
Recreation certification preferred.
Physical Requirements:
This position primarily involves work in an office environment, but is frequently in the field. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
Remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, operate a computer and other standard office equipment, and communicate effectively with staff and the public.
Stand and/or walk for long periods of time during events or programs, or program preparation.
Move about the office to access files, supplies, and attend meetings.
Occasionally bend, reach, kneel, or climb a step stool to retrieve or store materials.
Lift, carry, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Drive to other locations for training and meetings as needed.
Traverse uneven ground or rugged environments, sometimes in inclement weather.
